Lately people keep giving me a word. The word is BALANCE. My naturopath first gave it to me about a month ago.
Balance? I said, but I NEVER sit still, I told her.
Exactly! she exclaimed. And then I’m pretty sure she ‘eye rolled’ me…
Yep, I’m pretty sure it’s a sign..
Anyway, it got me thinking…why is it SO HARD to just slow down, to find some ‘balance’ in life?
For me lately it’s because I’ve been working on an all consuming project, so it’s no surprise that I’ve been racing around at a hundred miles per hour.
And it has to be said I really am an all or nothing kind of girl. When life is good its spectacular and when it’s not, well…it’s all kinds of shit.
I’m that way in my friendships, with my family, in my work life and in love.
I strive really hard to be a good person, to be good to people, to be kind and to be a good daughter and friend.
And there in lies the rub people, in modern life, we’re trying to be too much, of everything, ALL OF THE TIME TO EVERYONE and it’s exhausting.

So, how do you get around it? Well here’s some things I’ve been trying that seem to give me a little bit of ‘balance’:
This is about tuning in. To your instincts, to your thoughts, to your body. If you can take time out for approx. 10 minutes in the morning before you get out of bed to do some deep breathing or a short meditation it will do you the world of good. Kind of not possible if you’re a Mama Bear and there’s a little person trying to stick their fingers up your nose, but this works for any kind of quiet time whenever you can get it. And to be fair I don’t do it every day, maybe every second or third if I’m lucky.
Turning my mobile phone to Airplane Mode
I do this lately when I’m working or need to concentrate so I’m not constantly distracted by txts, phone calls or the ‘gram’. I also put it in another room when I’m sleeping.
Nature & exercise
At least twice a week I try and walk with a friend sans phone. It’s uninterrupted time. Whoever needs me can wait. Being in nature also grounds me, I’m still a country girl at heart.
Pilates is another really easy way for me to switch off for an hour. Well not switch off, I have to concentrate on what the instructor is saying or I’ll fall off the machine, but it stops my mind buzzing and gets me thinking about my body and how its feeling instead.
Say no more often
I’ve been thinking long and hard about invitations lately and why I want to go. If it’s simply because I feel like I can’t say no, then I really have to weigh it up. This is easy for me in Winter because I hate it, in Summer not so much…
Take a pause
Whether it’s to spend an afternoon with yourself, your bestie or your family, taking time out from work is really, really important and very under rated. Creativity tends to bounce back when I stop. But, its very hard to find when I’m constantly running from appointment to meeting to work to a function or a date with no time in between.
Dealing with stuff
Yep, this is a big one. I don’t just mean that cupboard in the hallway that won’t shut. I also mean making some space in your life to deal with any emotional clutter. I’ve been guilty of “putting on a brave face and getting on with it” more times in my life than I’d care to remember. But…unfortunately, emotions catch up with you in the end. Just like everything else, you have to make space for your them and sit with them. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s also necessary to move forward. No other way around this one I’m afraid, you’ve got to do the work.
