Winter School Holiday Activities for Kids in the South West

Most winter school holidays, I pack up the Jamo clan and we head south. So I am a seasoned EXPERT at finding things for the kids to do come rain, hail or shine. So much so that I was asked to write this winter school holiday activities for kids article for Your Margaret River Magazine.

So as the saying goes, don’t let it rain on your parade… and with my top 11 fabulous activities for the kids, everyone can stay happy.

Dark skies don’t stop the fishing for the Down South Crew…

1. Ngilgi Cave, Yallingup

A nature-based activity for the whole family, Ngilgi Cave is perfect for rainy days and is also great for the Summer heat as its a pleasant 20 degrees all year round. Explore at your own pace or join a semi-guided cave tour. make sure you buff up on your stalactites and stalagmites knowledge so you can seem the brainiac with the little nuggets

2. Orana Cinemas, Busselton

Movies during the school holidays should be mandatory. The kids are happy? Yep. Do you get two hours of (almost) peace. Maybe. Do you get to eat popcorn and a choc-bomb? DEFINITELY.  With plenty of fab films on this school holidays like Despicable Me 3 (we LOVED it – you MUST see it!), grab your kids, get your popcorn and choc-bomb and sit back and enjoy one of the latest blockbusters on the big screen!

3. Yallingup Maze, Yallingup

With an indoor free-to-play café full of puzzles, games and amazing hot chocolates, the Yallingup Maze is perfect for those rainy days. Maybe don a raincoat and brave the maze outside? We’ve done it and the kids had a great time! Just make sure you take a change of clothes because if you take longer than expected, prepare to get soggy!

4. Dunsborough Tavern, Dunsborough

My favourite thing when I’m down south is when  hubby is encouraged volunteers to take the kids to pub for a ‘countery’ and a play. The Dunsborough Tavern has a cool indoor play centre (think McDonalds style), plus plenty of room inside so you can sit next to as far away as possible to the kids. 536 Open 10am – late Everyday. 536 Naturaliste Terrace Dunsborough  9755 3657. 5. Bellview Shell Collection, Witchcliffe

If your little ones love to find shells on the beach, they’ll love one of the largest collections of shells and coral in the world right here in WA! Enjoy more than 30,000 different shells and corals on display.

6. Candy Cow, Cowaramup

Who doesn’t like to watch candy being made? At Candy Cow you’ll find old-fashioned lollies, chocolates, fudge and their famous honey crunch. Watch it being poured at 11am (weekends & holidays). Definitely a must-see, must-taste experience!

7. Xscape at the Cape Fun Park, Dunsborough

This place is the BOMB in summer… but it still has plenty to do in winter. From mini-golf, to trampolines, laser tag and bouncy castles. Plus spectators are free – so you can sit and watch for FREE (as it should be!).  They are open every day of the school holidays 10:00 am until 3:30 pm. Plus they have a great winter offer: Every Amaze n Lazer Tag Dry Combo ticket purchased will receive a ‘Two or the Price of 1’ voucher for your next visit.

8. 3 Oceans Winery

Want to wine and dine on a rainy day? Ocean’s has award winning wines and a restaurant for the adults, plus a kid’s area teaming with video games, toys, chalkboards and colouring-in. If the rain clears up there’s a large outdoor area with football, soccer and cricket equipment. Perfect for four seasons in one day – which is totally probable down south!

9. Naturaliste Reptile Park, Carbunup

With enclosures inside so you can stay dry, the reptile park is a great learning and wet-weather day experience for kids and kids-at-heart. Get up close to all things slithery and scaly…

11. Margaret River Chocolate Factory

Really… do I need to explain this one? With a massive indoor space and FREE entry and FREE tastings plus a lovely cafe to have a lunch or just a snack, this factory has top be on your list. It’s always on ours – and I never escape without some of their custom-made honeycomb chocolate (per-fect-ion) and a massive handful of the white chocolate duds. I have to test them every time. Just because.
